Peace Memorial Park and Museum

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum is the cornerstone of this journey, embodying the city’s resilience and unwavering dedication to peace. This historic site stands as a living testament to the events of August 6, 1945, when the first atomic bomb devastated Hiroshima. Begin at the iconic Atomic Bomb Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserved to honor the memories of those lost and to inspire a world free of nuclear weapons. The park, designed with symbolism in every corner, offers moments for reflection as you explore its it with your local knowledgeable Hiroshima guide. The Peace Memorial Museum provides a poignant and respectful narrative of Hiroshima’s history, featuring exhibits that include personal artifacts and stories of survival. Today, the park is not only a place of remembrance but also a vibrant gathering space for festivals and ceremonies, showcasing the city’s spirit and hope for the future.

Hiroshima’s Shotengais

Hiroshima’s shotengais are a vital part of the city’s fabric, offering a real glimpse into local life. Shotengais (long, often covered shopping streets) are traditional areas lined with a variety of shops and eateries, catering to everyday needs. These traditional shopping streets have been a fixture of the city for generations, surviving both the devastation of the past and the ongoing changes of modern life. As you walk through, you’ll encounter a mix of old and new—shops selling everything from everyday goods to local specialties, with a focus on practical needs rather than tourist-oriented offerings. These bustling streets are where the people of Hiroshima go about their daily routines, whether it’s shopping for groceries, enjoying a casual meal, or chatting with local vendors. The food here isn’t just for show; it’s part of the city’s everyday life, with dishes like Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and street food being popular and readily available. It’s a straightforward look at how the city operates and the blend of its historical past with its present-day vitality.

Hiroshima Castle

Hiroshima Castle, also known as Carp Castle, is a striking symbol of the city’s pre-war heritage. Originally built in the late 1500s by the powerful feudal lord Mori Terumoto, the castle was a focal point of the city for centuries. However, like much of Hiroshima, it was destroyed in the atomic bombing of 1945. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the castle, which include the remnants of the stone walls, moat, and foundation, providing a stark reminder of the city’s past. The reconstructed Hiroshima Castle, which stands near the original site, offers a look at what the castle may have looked like before the bombing, though it is a modern reconstruction built after the war. The surrounding park, filled with cherry trees that bloom in spring, is a popular spot for locals to relax and reflect. The ruins, along with the reconstructed keep, offer a layered perspective of Hiroshima’s resilience, connecting the city’s rich feudal history to its post-war rebirth.

Shukkeien Garden

We conclude the tour with a visit to Shukkeien Garden, a historic site that offers a glimpse into traditional Japanese landscape design. Originally built in 1620 by Ueda Soko, a tea master, the garden features carefully arranged landscapes meant to mimic natural scenery. Its ponds, bridges, and seasonal flowers are not just for aesthetics but are designed to encourage reflection and appreciation of nature. Though the garden was severely damaged during the atomic bombing, it was carefully restored to maintain its original beauty. Today, it stands as a peaceful spot for locals and visitors alike to enjoy some quiet time, with a mix of old trees, flowing streams, and traditional features that remind us of Hiroshima’s history and its ongoing connection to nature. This will mark the end of our tour, but not necessarily the end of your day. Hiroshima station is around a 15 minute walk from the ending point of the tour – and from there you can continue to explore central Hiroshima, or even spend the rest of your day on wonderful Miyajima Island.

Our Tour Guides

We've got around a dozen guides at your service. Here we showcase a few of our most active ones.

Kevin

We think it's important that everyone who works for Pinpoint Traveler is an active guide too, even the owner. Kevin's been in Japan thirteen years, but spent the first ten in the corporate world. Now he shares his love for Japan outside the confines of the office.
Shoji Pinpoint Traveler Osaka Guide

Shoji

Born in Japan, but moved to Canada when he was still quite young, Shoji is back and ready to share is passion for Japan with you. His main dominion is Osaka and on down to Koya-san and Wakayama, but he's such a popular guy that we often send him even further afield by request.
Mardi Pinpoint Traveler Osaka Guide

Mardi

Mardi's our Kyoto guide-in-chief, and her love for the city is infectious. She's got an uncanny ability for giving people just the right amount of information while still ensuring the tour stays light and fun. Be it temples and shrines, gardens, or nightlife, Mardi's your gal.
Dan Pinpoint Traveler Osaka Guide

Dan

Dan is a Spaniard, so of course his Spanish is native level, but his English is fantastic as well. He's got a warm personality and consistently makes our guests feel like they've made a new friend within minutes of meeting him. He also knows Osaka and Kyoto like no one's business!
Levy Pinpoint Traveler Osaka Guide

Levy

With nearly twenty years in Osaka, Levy's got this place WIRED. He's a major samurai and history aficionado, and in addition to knowing all the top sights like a true pro, he knows Osaka's nightlife better than (dare we say it!) the vast majority of Japanese who call Osaka home. Levy's originally from Israel, and runs tours in Hebrew too.
Suzie Pinpoint Traveler Osaka Guide

Suzie

Suzie is Japan born and raised, and we can't recommend her enough for tours in Tokyo and Yokohama. Our prior guests frequently say nicer things about Suzie than any of our own mothers have said about us! The consummate pro, she's not just got all the info, but also an uncanny knack for knowing what to show our guests.

Not profiled here are guides who speak Spanish (Kyoto, in addition to Dan in Osaka), French (Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo), and German (Kyoto and Tokyo).
